Edward Workman Military Cross Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles.

Date of Birth 4th August 1886.

Son of Frank and Sara Workman, The Moat, Strandtown, Belfast.

Wounded in Action, River Lys, France.

Died of Wounds 26/1/16. Aged 29 years.

1 Early Years: Ted's family and schooling

This short section of the Workman Archive records Ted's early years up to and including University and gives a unique insight into the prosperous environment in which he grew up.


2 Enlistment and Posting: Ted volunteers for the Great War to end all wars

In this also short section the story of Ted's early military career from volunteering at the outbreak of war, through his call-up and latterly his posting to the Western Front


3 At the Front: This substantial section largely comprises of Ted's Letters to his Mother, many of them from theFront Line. Many of these as you would expect are very general, but on a couple of occasions he gives significant detail of actions he was involved in.


4 Ted's Final Days: This section covers the events leading up to Ted's death and the visit from his parents and sister. This includes a number of eye witness accounts.


5 Condolences: This section contains many letters of sympathy from a wide selection of wartime society. Many of these attest to Ted's courage both in Belgium and France.


6 Memorial: In this final chapter the Workman Family and Shipyard Memorial can be seen in all its original glory.
